Introverted, thirteen-year-old Jake moves with his family to the Brooklyn apartment they inherited from his grandfather. His father continues renting the space below to a dress shop run by a woman and her thirteen-year-old son, Tony. The two boys quickly become close, sharing dreams for the future and making plans to go together to Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School. But, their friendship will be tested when Jake's father decides to raise the rent on Tony's mother's dress shop.
