Fresh Off the Boat is based on the memoir of the same name by chef Eddie Huang. The series takes place in the 1990's and follows Eddie's newly immigrated Asian American family as they attempt to assimilate and pursue the American Dream. The comedy begins as the family moves from a diverse neighborhood in Washington, D.C. to a much less diverse suburb of Orlando, Florida, where Eddie's father open's a cowboy-themed steakhouse restaurant. Through the course of the series, the family deals with the ups and downs of being immigrants in America, in a way that is both telling and humorous.
