When compulsive neat-freak Felix Unger is thrown out of the house by his wife, he's desperately depressed, so he goes to his best friend Oscar Madison for help. Oscar graciously invites Felix to stay with him. However, there's a problem: Oscar is an unrepentant slob. It doesn't take long for the two to clash, and within days they are virtually enemies; Felix can't tolerate Oscar's slovenly ways, while Oscar is completely annoyed by Felix's neatnik tendencies. Their friendship somehow prevails, but their disagreements regarding household matters continually test the boundaries of their friendship.
