When novelist Richard Castle kills off the main character in his series of mystery novels, he gets a case of writer's block. A serial killer begins committing homicides based off of the events in Castle's novels, and the NYPD brings Castle in for questioning. Seeing this as an opportunity to find inspiration for his next novels, Castle teams up with a homicide investigation team from the police department. He shadows detective Kate Beckett and uses her as inspiration for his next character. Beckett initially dislikes Castle's presence around her and her team, but their friendship eventually grows.
