Miguel dreams of becoming a musician like his idol Ernesto de la Cruz. The only problem is, his family has been banning music for generations! In an attempt to prove he has what it takes, Miguel ends up in the Land of the Dead, which the trickster Hector helps him to navigate. Together, the pair adventure through the colorful and wild world to learn what's really going on with Miguel's family history.
