Not every Union soldier was a hero. Not every Confederate soldier was a villain. During the American Civil War, Union soldiers killed the wife and young son of Confederate soldier Cullen Bohannon. After the war, Cullen searched for the murderers in the East only to find out that they had headed West where expansion was leading to prosperity for many people. Cullen makes his way to The Plains and crosses paths with labor groups building the First Transcontinental Railroad. Almost immediately, Cullen finds himself caught up in the drama centered around the mobile work camp known as "Hell on Wheels."
