"Orange Is the New Black" focuses on Piper Chapman, a New York City resident who is sentenced to serve time at Litchfield Penitentiary for 15 months. This is a federal prison for women. Her sentence was the result of a conviction for transporting money to a drug smuggler, who also happens to be her former girlfriend, Alex Vause. The series begins 10 years after the offense, when she has turned her life around and is living quietly. After being named by Alex at her trial, Piper is suddenly arrested and sent to prison. Needless to say, this shocks her fiance, causing severe difficulties in their relationship. Piper meets Alex again in prison, where they deal with the fallout of their relationship.
