After a pandemic devastates America, Joel becomes a smuggler who meets Ellie, a teenage girl who ends up his most valuable ally in this post-apocalyptic landscape. The two face off against ruthless killers and cannibalistic creatures created by the fungal infection that wiped out most of humanity just over 20 years earlier as Joel escorts his new companion away from Boston's heavily-scrutinizing quarantine zone, one of the few places still ruled by martial law, and towards a freer future. What starts out as a straightforward job quickly becomes a brutal journey where both must depend on the other to survive.
