Marion Fleming was a talented horse whisperer that dedicated her to life helping abused horses. After she's killed in a car accident, Amy continues her mother's work and utilizes similar skills. Her sister, Lou, returns from New York to take care of Heartland ranch. Their grandfather and a helper named Jack run the ranch alongside the sisters. Throughout the series, they care for neglected and abused horses, nursing them back to full health. Amy and Lou's father returns every so often; Ty and Amy deal with a budding romance from the very beginning.
