Crime is rampant in the English city where DCI Alan Banks does his work, and a lifetime of dealing with grisly murders has helped to make him stubborn and hard-edged. Still, he does his job extremely well, and occasionally he shows glimmers of heart underneath that hard shell. Meanwhile, his assistant, DS Annie Cabbot, is spunky and driven, and she does not like simply answering to him all of the time. She is quite determined to figure out cases for herself as much as she can in order to impress her stodgy boss and continue to advance in the ranks.
