Ragnar Lothbrock, the greatest hero of his time, begins life as a simple Viking farmer who feels a strong urge to discover civilizations beyond the westward sea. His governing earl, Haraldson, is convinced that there is nothing to the west and insists that they keep pillaging the familiar villages to the east. Ragnar, however, is convinced otherwise. He gathers a group of loyal followers including his best friend Floki, a talented craftsman who builds them a revolutionary Viking longship for their journey. Ragnar becomes a fearless warrior whom legend claims is a direct descendent of Odin, Norse god of war.
