Lorne Malvo is passing through the small town of Bemidji, Minnesota when he hits a deer. The victim in his trunk takes the opportunity to escape into the woods, and Malvo ends up in the hospital because of his concussion. Sitting next to him in the waiting room is Lester. Lester Nygaard is visiting the hospital because even though he's a grown man, he is still tormented by his high school bully who has broken his nose. Lester's wife and brother are constantly frustrated by meek Lesters inability to stand up for himself, and this latest example is the icing on the cake. When Lester and Malvo cross paths, nothing is the same for Lester ever again.
