Currently living the life of a law-abiding member of society, 30-something Piper Chapman conceals an unpleasant secret. She once led a far less wholesome life with a previous lover and her foolhardy past has caught up with her. An unlawful act from a decade ago has come to light, culminating in Piper's capture and imprisonment. Parted from her understanding fiance and forced to acknowledge her crime to the community, she relinquishes her cushioned big city existence for a not flattering on anyone orange jumpsuit. Piper struggles to find her place in an atmosphere unlike anything she's ever known before. Getting acquainted with a new roommate and dealing with unwelcome romantic overtures from a fellow inmate, she finds both hostility and fellowship among the unique band of prisoners. Penitentiary life is never dull with prisoners competing to win a place on the prisoners council and Piper's own dirty dancing routine resulting in a stay in solitary. Just as Piper has her own story to tell, so does every prisoner she meets.
