Jess is a quirky teacher who breaks up with her boyfriend after she finds him cheating on her. Emotionally devastated, she moves into a loft with three guys; Nick, Schmidt and Winston. The guys are reluctant to have the crying Jess move into their loft until they meet her best friend, a model named Cece. After meeting the model, they are eager to have Jess move in with them. The guys help her move on from her relationship with Spencer. When she goes to retrieve her belongings, they stand behind her supporting her the entire time. The roommates become close and support each other through single life as people in their early thirties and nurture each other's career choices. Jess becomes involved in various other relationships including one with her roommate, which moves from casual to semi-serious as time passes. Jess loses her job as a middle school teacher too. The growing friendship the roommates and Jess is a continual bright spot in Jess' life.
