After being falsely accused of sleeping with his captain's wife, and being shot by his captain, homicide detective Jim Longworth takes his settlement and leaves the stress of Chicago behind for a more relaxed life in Florida. Or so he thinks. After moving to the resort town of Palm Glade, Florida and joining the local branch of the FDLE, Jim realizes he may have underestimated the murder rate. The highly intelligent, and highly egotistical detective soon finds himself busier than he was in Chicago and not just with murder investigation. Despite his snarky and less than personable demeanor, Jim endears himself to several locals. He manages to develop a partnership with Dr. Carlos Sanchez, a forensic pathologist who Jim drags into several compromising situations and establishes a strange relationship with Callie, a nurse and mother who leads a complicated life that includes an incarcerated husband.
