Alan Harper is a recently divorced chiropractor who is taken to the cleaners by his ex-wife. He is unable to make it on his own because of the outrageous alimony and child support payments he must make to her. He moves in with his rich, jingle writing brother in order to get back on his feet again. Charlie Harper is the older brother, and he lives a wild, single life. The pair could not be more different, sharing only their disgust for their overbearing mother. Alan?s son makes frequent visits to the home, and the trio finds the beachfront quarters a little cramped for space at times. The housekeeper, Berta, lets them all know that she only works for Charlie.
