Elise is a devoutly religious 28-year-old owner of a small tattoo parlor. Didier is a 36 year-old atheist banjo player in a bluegrass band. When these two meet, it is love at first sight, and as they become closer, they manage to develop a deep bond despite their vastly different personalities and beliefs. Soon, they move into a picturesque farmhouse together, and Elise becomes pregnant. The couple is blissfully happy as they welcome their baby daughter Maybelle into the world, and for the next six years, life is perfect. However, their world comes crashing down when Maybelle suddenly becomes gravely ill. With such conflicting views on how to deal with their sick daughter and plan for the future, the couple must face the grim reality that the differences that once made their relationship so unique are now tearing their family apart.
