This show features Shawn, an incredibly observant and self-made amateur detective, and his long-time friend, Gus. Trained to pay acute attention to detail as a child by his policeman father, Shawn has an uncanny ability to piece together different parts of criminal cases that otherwise baffle the police. Because of Shawn's success in solving cases, he and Gus manage to convince the reluctant Santa Barbara police department that he has psychic abilities. The police, although hesitant, realize that Shawn has been able to help solve their cases, and begin to consult him and Gus on certain crimes. Shawn and Gus eventually open their own detective agency, called Psych, and between comedic, witty shenanigans, relationship woes, and family and friendship issues, they take on private clients as well as police consultations and help solve each case that they are presented with.
