Necessary Roughness focuses on the life of Dr. Danielle Santino, who is a recent divorcee. In the show, she has recently taken the position as a psychiatrist that is employed directly by a professional football team. The show focuses on two aspects of Santino's life, both her professional and personal lives. In the show, the quirky side of professional athletes is highlighted as she tries to help the athletes deal with the pressures of being in the national limelight. When she is not working, the show focuses on her personal life as she tries to move on from her recent divorce and begin to start dating again. At the same time she is forced to deal with her rebellious teenage children, who are dealing with plenty of issues on their own.
