Ice Road Truckers explores the little-known profession of driving tractor trailer trucks on temporary roads made of ice in the far north. This involves moving supplies and equipment where it is not safe for planes to fly or land. Several drivers are chosen each season to be featured, and aspects of the job, their home life and their personal thoughts and feelings are explored on camera. As drama unfolds, be it from nature or a mechanical failure, the cameras keep rolling. Educational snippets are also interspersed throughout the episodes, in order to further educate the viewer about the dangers and rewards of such an unusual job. To add further interest, a tally of earnings is kept for each driver. At the end of the season, the driver who made the most money is declared the 'winner' of the competition.
