Bruce Cogburn, a reclive author who went into hiding after his first novel inspired someone to go on a killing spree, starts to receive disturbing letters and other mail from a fan named William DuKent. Cogburn just wants to be left alone in his desert home away from the world, but he can't seem to escape torment from this so-called fan of his work. With each failed attempt to force DuKent to stop harassing him, Cogburn finds himself increasingly tortured, fearful and paranoid. Even the police are unable to help him stop DuKent. When the killer inspired by his book tells him that it contains a secret message, Cogburn must face horrible choices he made in his past before it's too late.
