A biologist and medical researcher accompany Commander Marina Barnett on a mission to Mars, but just minutes after their ship takes off, they discover that they are not alone. There is another passenger on board, and he is passed out behind one of the panels. Since they are too far away from the Earth to turn back around, they will have to deal with this unexpected situation. When they realize that the extra passenger has somehow become entangled with, and has irreparably damaged, a device that was being used to clean carbon dioxide from the air, they fear that they may soon run out of oxygen and time.
