Sentenced to prison for fifteen months for drug smuggling a decade ago, Piper Chapman trades in her fancy blouses for orange jumpsuits in this drama/comedy. On top of that, the woman (her ex) that named her is also incarcerated there. An ensemble of different inmates are introduced, and we learn about both Piper and her fellow inmates through real time stories as well as flashbacks. The show also depicts the harsh reality of prison life, physical and sexual abuse, corruption, discrimination, overcrowding, etc. specifically for women. It is loosely based on a 2010 memoir of the same name.
