It's eighteenth-century Brittany, which at the time is a desolate, near-deserted island. In this unusual setting, a female painter of note, Marianne, earns a commission for painting a wedding portrait. Her subject, Marianne, is kept in the dark about the painter's intention so that the painting shows her true nature. The painter observes the woman by day and works on her portrait only at night. The women develop a relationship as time passes and the wedding nears. Their friendship turns romantic, but it all might have to come to an end when the bride's mother returns. What starts as an assignment will end a different way.
