Ross Poldark returns to Cornwall, England following his time fighting in the American Revolutionary War. There, he finds his own family and country in crisis. Following his father's death, the property Poldark was to inherit has gone to seed. His love life is ruined, his situation is dire, and his fellow countrymen are being oppressed by poor fishing, closed tin and silver mines, expensive food prices and outrageous rents. To combat this oppression, Poldark turns his full attention to the task of making his land productive, behaving in a compassionate way to his tenants and trying to win back his true love.
