The social upheaval of the Civil War causes rippling effects that reach as far as New England. There, a family of four sisters and their mother struggle to make ends meet while their father is far from home as Christmas approaches. Each of the sisters has very different talents, such as an affinity for writing or playing music. The girls navigate the complicated rules of society as they struggle to make money and explore their first romances. They long to be reunited with their father, pursuing any avenue to help him as he contracts a dangerous illness.
