After an attack in her home, Vanessa Van Helsing remains comatose for three years. Yet, when she finally does wake up, Vanessa isn't certain whether she's alive or dead given how drastically the world has changed: The sky is perpetual twilight and the entire planet that was once a place filled with human hopes and dreams has been transformed into a post-apocalyptic landscape filled with deadly nightmares. A marine named Axel, who has been guarding Vanessa the entire time, explains to her how a vampire plague swept across the Earth. Her blood seems to hold the possibility for a cure.
