Rita just wants to provide a good life for her daughter Ruthie. A string of bad luck and financial missteps makes that difficult though, and she frequently relies on her relationships with men to keep them stable. When Ruthie convinces her mother to leave her latest boyfriend, the two find themselves stranded in the small town of Fat River where Rita starts waitressing and the two finally begin to feel stable. Ruthie finds a friend and confidante in transgender waitress Peter Pam, and just as her life seems to be improving, a new man enters her mother?s life.
