A CIA operations officer who suffers from bipolar disorder, Carrie Mathison, believes that an American soldier has become an operative for Al-Qaeda after receiving a warning while serving in Iraq. When an unsanctioned operation goes sideways, officials force Carrie to return to the United States. At home, she learns that a U.S. Marine Sergeant, Nicholas Brody, had recently been rescued after almost a decade missing in action. When it is revealed that the enemy had held Brody captive the entire time, Carrie does what she must to prove to her superiors that this "war hero" is a turncoat in disguise.
