After Elena Gilbert and her younger brother, Jeremy, lose their parents in a horrible car accident, they must try to pick up the pieces while living with their aunt in their small home town of Mystic Falls, Virginia. When Elena meets a new student at school, Stefan Salvatore, she quickly falls in love with him. The Salvatore family has old ties to the town, but Elena soon discovers that Stefan's personal ties are just as old: Stefan is a vampire trying to control his blood-lust while struggling to deal with his brother Damon who enjoys being a bloodthirsty supernatural creature.
