Frank Adler finds himself raising Mary, his young niece, by himself. After she starts attending school, Frank and Mary's teacher learn that she's gifted with advanced intelligence. Mary understands more than her young peers, and she perhaps knows more than the adults around her. Unfortunately, Frank's mother soon comes back into the picture and initiates a custody battle for Mary. Both Frank and his mother desire different things for Mary. This conflict brings a heavy toll on each person, especially Mary.
