James Cole time-travels from the year 2045 where a plague has already killed almost everyone. He tries to reset the past to save the human race from extinction. He travels to 2013 to hunt a scientist he is calling Leland Frost. He believes Leland is responsible for the plague. Desperately hoping to unmake history, he temporarily kidnaps Dr. Cassandra Railly, thinking she can lead him to Liland. Confused and frightened Dr. Railly, tries to figure out what he wants. Finally, she realizes he thinks he's from the future, making her more afraid. Cole realizes that she has not met Leland yet and that he traveled back too far in time. Although she does not believe him yet, he promises her he'll be back in 2 years, and that she should find him; and then disappears right before her eyes. The quest to save mankind from the plague continues, with plenty of action, twists and turns.
