The Americans follows two Soviet KGB intelligence officers who are posing as a married couple in order to spy on the American government. Set in the early 1980s, Elizabeth and Philip Jennings live in the Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C. with their children, who know nothing of their parents' true identities. Adding to the plot, the couple's neighbor, Stan, is an FBI counterintelligence agent. The story follows the couple's lives and incorporates historic events into the plot of the show.
