Jessica Day, known as "Jess," is a young lady living in Los Angeles and teaching middle school. She also has a problem. She catches her ex-boyfriend with another woman and needs to find a new place to live. Unable to afford an L.A. apartment on a teacher's salary, she looks to Craigslist. She answers an ad for an apartment to rent and proceeds to move in with three quite unusual roommates, all of them guys. Nick Miller works as a bartender to make ends meets and put the failed law school experience behind him. Schmidt lives with the memory of being grossly overweight and thus does everything he can to stoke his appearance and score with the opposite sex. Winston Bishop is a former basketball star who struggles to define himself beyond life as a super-star athlete. Together the three must adjust to life with a female roommate, and Jess is just the quirky, eclectic girl to help them do it.
