Leslie Knope helps to run the parks department in the small town of Pawnee, Indiana and with the help of her friends and colleagues eventually becomes a city councilwoman. Her closest associates include her best friend Ann, a nurse; the parks director, Ron Swanson, a conservative who hates government; staffers Jerry, Tom and Donna; the intern April and her husband Andy for whom Swanson is something of a father figure; and city manager Chris, a positive-thinking health nut. While managing small-town politics and the media to push the agenda of the parks department, Leslie also falls in love with an auditor, Ben, and the two marry.
