How I Met Your Mother follows the dating exploits of the main character Ted Mosby, a single man living in New York City. The show follows Mosby as well as his four friends: Marshall, a law school graduate and old college friend of Ted's; Lily, Kindergarten teacher and Marshall's wife; Robin, a local news anchor and occasional love interest to Ted; and Barney, a charismatic womanizer with a mysterious occupation and an oddity of hobbies. The show is framed as a story being told by Ted Mosby to his two teenage children. The show engages many unique story-telling elements, such as breaking the fourth wall, unreliable narration, and toying with many common television tropes.
