Jackie Peyton is a tough-as-nails Emergency Department nurse at All Saint's Hospital in New York City. Whether it's patching-up the sick and wounded patients who come through the ER, or cleaning up messes or preventing a crisis in one of her co-workers personal lives, Nurse Jackie does it all. And it's usually done with a sardonic grin on her face. Her secret to being a savior to her friends and patients alike? It turns out that Jackie is a bit of a pill-popper. She uses adderall, xanax, and everything in between, to give her the extra boost she needs to get through another trying shift in the frenzied urban ER. Jackie's friends, whose lives she occasionally manages, include feckless nursing student Zoey; Dr. Cooper, a handsome but ultimately nervous man; and Dr. O'Hara, a prim Brit who is also Jackie's best friend. Then, of course, there's Eddie--a pharmacist at All Saint's to whom Jackie turns for the occasional afternoon tryst, sometimes in exchange for her next fix.
