Lord Robert Crawley's greatest desire is to protect his family's beautiful Yorkshire estate, Downton Abbey. When he discovers that his named heir has died during the sinking of the Titanic, his distant cousin, Matthew Crawley, is called in to prepare to inherit the estate. Matthew and his modern mother, Isabel, move to Downton Abbey, their views sometimes clashing with Robert's old-fashioned mother, the Dowager Countess of Grantham. Of course, another of the main concerns are the marrying off of daughters Mary, Edith and Sybil - all beautiful girls but strong-willed in their own way. Meanwhile, the downstairs staff, led by devoted butler Mr. Carson and head-of-staff, Mrs. Hughes, engage in much engaging drama of their own as they attempt to lead their lives in the shadow of nobility.
