Four friends head for New York after graduating from Oberlin College. As they struggle to make lives for themselves in the big city, they each discover different challenges: neurotic Hannah, an aspiring writer, is plagued by bad choices and disappointing boyfriends; beautiful Marnie can't decide between her steady old boyfriend and many exciting new ones; eccentric Jessa finds herself in increasingly extreme relationships; and naive Shoshanna has to figure out when and how to lose her virginity. The show realistically portrays the city's cramped and sometimes squalid apartments and the girls' awkward, uncertain sexuality. As the episodes progress, the girls' relationships with each other develop and become more challenging and complex.
