If there is any illicit money to be made the small town of Charming, California, then outlaw motorcycle gang Sons of Anarchy is sure to be there. Led by its brusque president Clay Morrow, the Sons of Anarchy competes with local gangs for their share of the pie. Clay's stepson and vice president Jax is more of a thinking man than his fellow bikers. His mother Gemma is fiercely protective of her husband Clay and her son. Unbeknownst to Jax, Clay and Gemma are hiding a terrible secret. The status quo begins to change when Jax finds his dead father's old journal, full of hope and optimism about the future of the Sons of Anarchy. Jax increasingly becomes disillusioned with the gang's illegal activities when he realizes that the Sons of Anarchy was founded on more idealistic principles. In the midst of his internal crisis, Jax must deal with the pressure of fatherhood. Meanwhile, his old flame Tara returns to town, throwing him into a tailspin.
