Hounded with writer's block and wrestling with his live-in mother and daughter, mystery novelist Richard Castle experiences an unexpected interruption when he is drawn into the real-life world of crime. A murderer begins using his novel plots to kill unsuspecting victims. In an effort to clear his name, Castle teams up with acerbic detective Kate Beckett to solve the mystery. He draws inspiration from the investigation and begins penning a new series of books based on Kate. Together, the pair solves a string of murders using Castle's unconventional investigation techniques. Meanwhile, their combative relationship begins to deepen into something more serious.
