Ray Archer, a detective on the verge of retirement who received many honors and awards over the years for his work in homicide is pulled back into the thick of a case when police discover bodies that seem to indicate that a serial killer is at work in the city. Each body is part of some grotesque version of the game "Hangman." Archer's badge number is found at a scene and he, along with Will Ruiney, his partner and a criminal profiler, and Christi Davies, a crime journalist, attempt to find a link between Archer's past and the killer's motivation.
