London is in economic crisis - The Great Depression. Jane and Michael Banks are adults now. Michael has three children of his own. The family is suffering. They've experienced great personal and economic trouble, which has sucked the joy from their lives. It is during this time of difficulty that Mary Poppins returns. Mary Poppins brings them something they've been missing - a sense of wonder, light and happiness, things that have been absent from their lives since childhood.
