In 1952, Therese is a lonely young woman in Manhattan who supports herself by working as a department store sales clerk. One day at her job, Therese meets Carol, a beautiful and glamorous socialite who is much older than Therese. Despite the many obstacles in their way and the disapproval of society, the two women fall in love. When Carol begins to go through a bitter divorce, she must choose between having a happy life with Therese or gaining custody of her child.
