Will McAvoy is a news anchor who has grown overly complacent with his career. Will hosts a bland but popular cable news show that airs every night on the fictional channel ACN. One day, however, he finds that his old values have awakened, and he recommits himself to a relentless journalistic mission for the truth. However, a public rant on this very topic induces most of the staff of Will's show to depart. A new group takes their place, one that includes executive producer MacKenzie McHale, a fearless war journalist and Will?s old girlfriend. Will is also fortunate to have on his side Charlie Skinner, the president of ACN?s news department. Charlie, once a journalist himself, wistfully remembers the respect that television news divisions used to command, and he yearns for that sense of authority to return. Many of the people who work for Will are young and idealistic, and "The Newsroom" chronicles their various romantic interludes as well as their quests to hunt down major scoops and land interviews with important newsmakers.
