Cullen Bohannon is a resident of the American South who is just trying to live his life the way he feels is right. He has a wife and a piece of land that he farms to support his family. When the Civil War breaks out, Bohannon does his duty and signs up for the Confederate Army. Bohannon manages to survive the war, but he cannot say the same for his wife. He finds out that a band of renegade Union soldiers are the ones who stormed his property and killed his family. That sets off an anger in Cullen Bohannon that can only be satisfied by the deaths of each person in that band of renegade soldiers. He starts to track the soldiers and finds himself in the American Midwest just as the Transcontinental Railroad is about to join the country together. It is a great time in American history, but Cullen Bohannon is too set on revenge to enjoy the moment.
