Daniel Pierce is a celebrated neuropsychiatrist who has won the Davenport Award and has a tenured post as professor of a high-ranking university. Like real-life genius John Nash, Pierce is brilliant as well as scizophrenic. He manages to maintain his job and live independently between hospitalizations with the help of his dedicated teaching assistant and housemate, Max Lewicki, whom he hired specifically to tell him what is real and what is an illusion. The fun begins when a former student, Kate Moretti, who also happens to be an FBI agent, seeks his input on cases. With the help of Lewicki and Natalie, an illusion resulting from Pierce's illness who provides a sounding board and offers advice, Pierce helps Moretti solve deeply convoluted cases. A twist is that the cases always involve neuropsychiatric concepts that he is shown teaching to students.
