Now in its sixth season, The Mentalist continues to be one of the more unique crime dramas on network television. The tried-and-true crime-solving techniques are present, but The Mentalist applies an unorthodox approach by utilizing the main character's finely honed observational skills and knowledge of human behavior to solve even the most baffling crimes. Obsessed with hunting down the serial killer Red John, who murdered his wife and daughter, The Mentalist joins the CBI (California Bureau of Investigation) as a consultant. His determination to determine the identity of his nemesis is the underlying storyline of the program, sometimes to the exasperation of his co-workers and superiors. A "lone wolf," he appears to have little interest in anything other than his quest to locate Red John, and his willingness to employ techniques far outside of the CBI "playbook" (such as hypnotism, pickpocketing and elaborate ruses) keeps him walking a fine line between detective work and con-man, which happened to be one of his previous occupations. Early in Season Six, Red John was unmasked and subsequently murdered, ending a major chapter for the series.
