Several young doctors fresh out of medical school embark upon their careers at Seattle Grace Hospital, where they are about to get a powerful taste of the sacrifices and rewards of spending a life attending to the health of the public. Meredith Grey is the most prominent. The daughter of a renowned surgeon, she has a troubled relationship with her mother, who was often neglectful when Meredith was a child and who has always put impossible standards upon her. Now, her mother is unable to take care of herself and rarely even recognizes Meredith, so working at the hospital under the chief of surgery with whom her mother had an affair is a trying personal challenge. Other young doctors in Meredith's group include the soft-hearted George, the free-spirited Izzy and the fierce Christina. As they save some patients and lose others, they come to know the reality of endless days of living at the hospital with little sleep, and their lives all become deeply entwined. Romantic entanglements abound as the young friends become full-fledged doctors.
